Trader Joe’s or Gourmet Garage In The SOHA?

Posted in Food, Neighborhood/City, Photography by ZPP on July 14, 2009

Soha Rental Space

The empty retail space in the SOHA building between 117th and 118th Street on Frederick Douglass Boulevard is getting a new tenant. This morning I witnessed a rental truck and a crew of men unloading kitchen equipment and industrial kitchen supplies into the location. I looked inside the space and noticed cold cases, ovens, and refrigerators already installed. There have been rumors circulating that it may be a Gourmet Garage or Trader Joe’s. I don’t know, but it is certain that the location is going to be producing and selling perishable foods.

my guess is that it’s not a trader joes – since they usually announce their new locations well in advance of their openings. but i’ve been wrong before, and there’s every chance i’m wrong again!

Its going to be commercial kitchen where homeless men prepare meals for the homeless; that was part of the original community benefits agreement.

It is a fully integrated program where some of the unsold condo units at SoHa 118 will be converted to housing for homeless men who are rehabilitated alcoholics. They will get part-time jobs (20 hours per week) with the Starbucks and get health insurance; Chase will set them up with a basic banking package with no fees; and they will have access to on-going rehab programs in the neighborhood. They will also work at least 20 hours per week in the commercial kitchen with the goal of learning jobs skills that could get them employed in local restaurants.

Tyrone, do you know where to find the community benefits agreement?

    Sounds far-fetched.

I dont think it would have been marketed as retail space for the last year if it was already designated a soup kitchen by the community agreement. the broker has been hyping the space for months…Tyrone sounds bogus.

Tyrone is bogus. It will be a grocery store, neither TJ’s nor Gourmet Garage. Opens in about six months.

  7. [...] week I reported that food equipment was being loaded into the retail space below of the SOHA. The work permit above states that the space will have an elevator and escalator with a mezzanine [...]
